Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
